WYOMING

State Standards in Language Arts

Kindergarten-Grade Four

 

Reading a Playbook® in the classroom meets the following Wyoming standards in English Language Arts and Reading:

 

READING

  • Students read a variety of grade level materials, applying strategies appropriate to various situations.
  • Students read a variety of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry from various sources, including materials recognizing cultural differences.
  • Students use decoding skills to read fluently (i.e., phonetic clues, structural analysis, context clues and illustrations).
  • Students gain meaning of new vocabulary words in reading passages (i.e., context clues, diagrams, illustrations, captions, and glossary).
  • Students use comprehension strategies to make predictions, identify the main idea and supporting details, compare and contrast, and summarize.
  • Students analyze literature for the elements of a story (i.e., setting, character traits, sequence of events, and problem and solution).
  • Students read and interpret written directions, diagrams, maps, charts, graphs and tables.

Advanced 4th Grade

  • Students performing at an advanced level independently read a variety of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry in and out of the classroom. They independently demonstrate an in-depth understanding of main idea, supporting details, and elements of a story.
  • Students make multiple comparisons, accurate predictions, and a comprehensive summary. They internalize decoding and vocabulary skills.

Proficient 4th grade

  • Students performing at a proficient level read a variety of 4th grade materials (i.e., fiction, non-fiction and poetry).
  • Students predict and determine main idea. They compare, contrast, and summarize.
  • Students use decoding skills to read fluently and use various strategies to gain the meaning of new vocabulary. They interpret written directions, diagrams, maps, charts, graphs, and tables.

Partially Proficient 4th grade

  • Students performing at a partially proficient level demonstrate minimal understanding of concepts and skills with teacher assistance.
  • Students predict and recognize the main idea, identify some supporting details, and recognize some story elements. They draw simple comparisons, apply limited decoding skills, and use limited vocabulary.

 

LISTENING

  • Students listen for a variety of purposes appropriate to the grade level.
  • Students listen attentively and show respect for all contributions to a discussion or presentation.
  • Students demonstrate listening comprehension by following oral directions and applying information to assigned tasks.

Advanced 4th grade

  • Students performing at an advanced level listen attentively to a variety of oral presentations and show respect for all contributions. They give relevant feedback in the form of questions, comments and elaborations to the topic.

Proficient 4th grade

  • Students performing at a proficient level listen attentively to a variety of oral presentations and show respect for all contributions. They give relevant feedback in the form of questions, comments and elaboration to the topic.

Partially Proficient 4th grade

  • Students performing at a partially proficient level listen attentively to a variety of oral presentations and show respect for all contributions. They give related feedback in the form of comments and questions.

 

SPEAKING

  • Students speak for a variety of purposes and audiences with sophistication and complexity appropriate to the grade level.
  • Students use complete sentences and delivery skills (i.e., eye contact, posture, rate, volume, and articulation) during formal and informal speaking situations.

Advanced 4th grade

  • Students performing at an advanced level use complete sentences and highly effective delivery skills (i.e., eye contact, posture, rate, volume, and articulation) during formal and informal speaking situations.

Proficient 4th grade

  • Students performing at a proficient level use complete sentences and delivery skills (i.e., eye contact, posture, rate, volume, and articulation) during formal and informal speaking situations.

Partially Proficient With teacher assistance, 4th grade

  • Students performing at a partially proficient level use some complete sentences and some delivery skills (i.e., eye contact, posture, rate, volume, and articulation) during formal and informal speaking situations.

 

LANGUAGE ARTS INTEGRATION

  • Students synthesize individual language arts skills.
  • Students apply language arts standards to grade level materials across the curriculum.

Advanced 4th grade

  • Students performing at an advanced level apply reading strategies, the writing process and skills, oral presentation skills and listening skills to the completion of tasks in other content subjects without teacher assistance or prompting.

Proficient 4th grade

  • Students performing at a proficient level apply reading strategies, the writing process and skills, oral presentation skills and listening skills to the completion of tasks in other content subjects upon teacher direction.

Partially Proficient 4th grade

  • Students performing at a partially proficient level apply reading strategies, the writing process and skills, oral presentation skills and listening skills to the completion of tasks inconsistently with teacher assistance.
