Parent Involvement with Reader's Theater

The U. S. Department of Education has declared that reading aloud is the single most important activity that parents can do with their children to ensure their future success, and that reading aloud should continue throughout the grades.

Educators recommend that children, no matter what their age, read aloud to others regularly in order to build vital communication skills necessary to be successful in life.

Reading Playbooks® as Family

Lend and Extend Reader's Theater™

Edu-tainment: a form of entertainment designed to educate as well as to amuse. Playbooks® Reader's Theater is a great example of "edutainment," a popular way to engage children in learning. The Playbook® format, appealing stories, and colorful pages make reading fun!

What could be more fun than using your imagination to act out characters from a play? Reading the stories aloud and acting them out using voice inflection and gestures is an exciting way for children to express themselves and improve their reading skills at the same time. It is something families can do together (instead of watching T.V.) or something children can do with a group of friends. Reading aloud in an interactive manner allows all your children to read with self assurance and enthusiasm, which can translate into higher confidence and self-esteem in the classroom. Reading with you children encourages a passion for reading and teaches them that readings is valuable.

Ideal for the typical family, Family Sets include 4 copies of the story. Additional single copies can be purchased separately.

  Print Flyer

Lend and Extend Reader's Theater™ gives teachers the opportunity to encourage parent engagement by lending classroom copies of stories to students to take home and read with theri familes in Reader's Theater format. (Print this flyer above for details.) Students first read the stories in the classroom within their small groups with each student taking on a character role. Then students can read the same role with their families, gaining more repeated guided or reading practice at home. Lend and Extend™ comprises a simple small accessory pack which can be purchased separately or with any Playbook® story or kit, and allows you to split a typical one-story set of six books into three Lend & Extend™ take-home packs. These packs are designed to be checked out of the classroom or school library by different students, three at a time, and returned back to school. You can stock your library with a variety of story sets so that more than three students at a time can enjoy the benefits of at-home reading.
